The Host Town

Fuenlabrada, Spain

Fuenlabrada is a city and municipality of Spain located in the Community of Madrid. As of 2018, it had a population of 193,586, making it the region's fourth most populated municipality. Its name derives from the contraction of 'fuente labrada', Spanish for 'carved fountain'.

There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Paleolithic (La Cantueña) and the Bronze Age (Casas del Cerro). Other settlements in the current municipal area, including Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos, existed during the Upper Middle Ages.

The founding of the village of Fuenlabrada can be traced to the late 14th century, when it was populated by former inhabitants of the nearby settlements of Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos. The first mention of Fuenlabrada, which by the early 16th century was part of the Land of Madrid, was recorded later in the century, during the reign of Philip II, in the so-called Topographic Relations of Philip II.

While the agricultural sector of the economy remained dominant, the making of rosquillas and buns in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding towns by the end of the 19th century. Following the end of the 1936–1939 Civil War, in which some parts of Fuenlabrada endured serious damage, the Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas undertook some building works in the municipality during the 1940s and 1950s.

Fuenlabrada witnessed a dramatic population explosion in the 1970s and 1980s, due to large scale immigration of young workers coming from the capital city and other agrarian regions (chiefly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia) seeking affordable prices in housing. Going from 7,369 inhabitants in 1970, the municipality reached a population of 18,442 by 1975, and 65,181 in 1980, credited as the biggest relative population increase in Spain during that decade. Foreign workers have also settled in the city, most of them coming from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China and Romania. The demographic growth has continued in the ensuing decades.

The city is home to basketball team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. Their home games are played at Fernando Martín sports centre, which has a capacity of 5,700.

CF Fuenlabrada is the local football team, playing in Segunda División (second tier in Spanish league). They play as home team at the Estadio Fernando Torres, inaugurated by the footballer's parents on 1st September 2011. The stadium has a capacity of 7,500.

Since 1979, the municipality has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been part of the so-called "red belt" of the Community of Madrid.

Additional Information

This Grand Prix transmission was preceded by a 30-minute Grand Prix Presents introductory programme - a practice that would be continued throughout the 2026 series. This included 'Captain's Passion' - a non-scoring game between the two teams which involved the team captains having to stand with a tray above their shoulders while the patrons had to answer questions about the towns they represented. If the patrons got the question right, weight was added to the opponent's tray. However, if they got it wrong, the additional weight went onto their own team's tray. The competitor who dropped the tray first would lose the game. The winner - in this instance the Polinyà team - carried the advantage of the Golden Vachette into the programme proper - adding 2 pts to their score should they win the game on which they presented it (a loss on that game would result in no bonus points being added).

'The Greased Pole' (Game 1) was a game that had been played in Grand Prix in the early 2000s but had been dropped due to security issues relating to its organisation. It involved a greased 6m high pole, from the top of which joints of ham were hung. The players, in turn, had to retrieve the joints. Polinya played their Joker on the game and made it look easy by retrieving 8 compared to Cantalejo's 2. This game is commonly played at many summer festivals around Spain, either with a vertical or an horizontal pole.

During the game 'Alice in Fallsland', the main referee Asun Langa fell to the floor whilst officiating on the game. Fortunately for her, since the players were protected with safety equipment and she was not, the outcome was not serious. She responded with a smile to a concerned Ramón García, confirming that she was perfectly fine after the incident.

A slight difference was made in the Dictionary game for 2026. While the first 2 questions gave the teams +/- 3 pts as before, the last one had a slightly higher value (+/- 4 pts). While this was made with the intention of making the last round more exciting, Polinya had already won the heat by a huge margin, and it only served to deliver an even more devastating result for Cantalejo.

Additional Information

This programme, originally scheduled to be broadcast on the night of Monday 20th July 2026, was postponed. This was due to a special transmission on TVE La 1 celebrating the Spanish victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the previous evening. The Spain team had beaten Argentina 1-0, with a Spanish goal in the second-half of extra-time proving decisive.

The pre-emption meant that Heat 2 was rescheduled for Monday 27th July. This had previously occurred during the 2024 season when again the second programme of the Grand Prix season was pre-empted for a similar celebration to mark Spain's victory in the UEFA European Championships.

Whereas in 2024 all subsequent programmes ran a week behind their original planned schedule, TVE chose to screen Heat 3 on Sunday 2nd August, with the planned schedule resumed with Heat 4 on Monday 3rd August.

By featuring in this broadcast, Zumárraga became the first town from the province of Guipuzkoa to take part in Grand Prix. Before this occasion, Guipuzkoa was the only Spanish province that had not been represented in any edition of the series.

Despite losing the Golden Vachette game in Grand Prix Presents, Zumárraga’s captain deserved praise as he was able to withstand weights up to 5kg on his tray without tumbling. The team lost out due to the incorrect answers given by his Team Patron.

Despite having put two grains in the beecomb in Game 2 - 'High Beekeeping' - Balanegra were judged only to have scored with their first as the second one fell off and was not considered to have been placed correctly.

Both Grand Prix programmes shown on the night of Monday 27th August won big in the overnight TV ratings. The main programme (with a 16% share of the watching audience) almost doubled the score of the second-best rival programme (9.2%).

Additional Information

For the first time in the history of Grand Prix, both team captains were women.

Desiree Vila, appearing as the patron of San Juan de la Rambla, became the first physically handicapped person to take part in Grand Prix. Due to a very serious injury that she sustained while already a professional athlete, her right leg had to be amputated in 2015. Desiree refused to allow this tragic setback to impede her athletic career, developing great success in Paralympic athletics, achieving a 6th place at long jump in Tokyo’s 2021 Paralympiad.

Game 7 - 'Alice in Basketland' - was a tremendous mess. The game involved a revolving platform in the shape of a clock with its hands attached. The players had to do whole laps - in an anti-clockwise direction - in the clock and try to score a basket, helped by their patrons. Problems arose early on since the hands of the clock quickly broke down due to the falls of the participants, with one of them completely falling over and the other one very scarcely maintaining itself on the clock. Despite that, both legs of the game were considered valid with one basket for each team. This was unfortunate for Quintanar del Rey who tried many times but could only get one right, whereas San Juan de la Rambla got one in only two tries.

This heat witnesszed the biggest runaway victory in the history of Grand Prix. Other than losing 'Hot Potato' and tying 'Alice in Basketland', Quintanar del Rey won every other game and answered all the Dictionary questions right. This meant that they achieved an incredible score of 42 out of 44 points available (95.45% of the maximum possible). It must be noted that due to different scoring systems, teams in the 2001 series registered more points, but none came close to the percentage.

While there is no argument that the team of San Juan de la Rambla were well-beaten on the night, it should be pointed out that they scored more points than either of the losing teams in Heats 1 and 2. This meant that - at least temporarily - they were in one of the semi-final qualifying positions at the end of play. This very small glint of light would only last 24 hours in Grand Prix's broadcasting history, since Heat 4 would be transmitted on the following night!

Additional Information

For the first time in Grand Prix 2026, the relative scores of the two competing teams were close enough prior to the final round of The Dictionary that either one could have won through. However, once again, the increased value of + or - 4pts for the final question given made no material difference. In the first three heats, the scores were not close enough for a sudden death climax, and here the outcome would have been the same under 2025 rules (+ or - 3pts on the last question). Regardless, this heat built up to a nailbiting conclusion!

As in Heat 3, the losing team - in this case, Altura - scored sufficiently to register in the qualification places for the semi-finals, as expected knocking the previous night's losing team San Juan de la Rambla out of 4th place.

Additional Information

The final score of this contest suggests a one-sided contest, but this was anything but that with the two teams closely matched throughout. There was a single point dividing the two teams at the end of the physical games and it was the Pravia team's poor performance on the Dictionary rounds that made the Serranillos del Valle victory appear to be something of a landslide.

Despite the yawning chasm between the point scores of the two teams, Serranillos del Valle fell short of a potential semi-final place by failing to match the previous week's score of 29 by Altura, the team with the fourth highest points total of Grand Prix 2026. What made this even more galling for the Serranillos del Valle team was that Altura's score was for a second place!

With only one further heat to play once this contest was decided, the first two qualifiers for the semi-final were confirmed as Quintanar del Rey and Polinyà.
